US Senator Issues “Final Warning” to AI Giants: Halt Development or Face Congressional Action

Aug 10, 17:10

August 10th, according to AXIOS, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders urged leading AI company CEOs to pause AI development, warning that if action is not taken, lawmakers will intervene. The letter has reportedly been sent to OpenAI's founder Sam Altman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, and Zuckerberg.

Sanders stated: "At a time when we have seen humanity lose control and create potentially dangerous viruses, your companies are still racing ahead—investing billions of dollars in a technology that no one can fully understand, predict, or control."

However, AI legislation, especially efforts led by progressives like Sanders, is unlikely to garner enough support to become law in this Congress. What can be expected at this point are symbolic bills and public pressure actions—and if the Democratic Party regains control of either house, there may be congressional investigations and subpoenas to hold tech CEOs accountable.
