Multiple trading platforms strengthen security measures after Binance's $6.3 billion theft, Coinbase adjusts cold storage system.
October 31 - According to a report by the UK's Financial Times, following a $6.3 billion theft, Binance and multiple crypto trading platforms are intensifying security measures and informing customers about the safety of their funds. Coinbase Chief Security Officer Jeff Lunglhofer stated that the company has made partial adjustments to its cold storage systems "purely as a precaution." Gemini has added warning and restriction measures for fund transfers; Kraken said it is closely monitoring the situation and that its platform services are operating normally.
Coinbase Vice President of Product Will Megson also stated that the company is significantly upgrading telephone protection measures to protect users from scam calls. He noted that scammers often keep victims on the line while inducing them to change account settings.
In a Friday evening update, Binance said it had contained the compromised infrastructure, revoked affected authorizations, and added controls to prevent further unauthorized activity. Its initial investigation found that an engineer's laptop had been compromised, and additional breach points were subsequently discovered. As of the time of the report, withdrawals remained suspended, and the platform estimated restoration within approximately 34 hours.
Blockchain tracking firms attributed the attack to the North Korea-linked hacking group TraderTraitor. Chainalysis stated that after the funds left Binance, the attackers used automated tools to move the stolen funds on the Tron network, and warned all trading platforms to remain vigilant.
OKX CEO Star Xu called for the industry to establish real-time security incident reporting, coordinated monitoring of suspicious funds, and rapid response mechanisms for potential attacks, while strengthening defenses against emerging AI-driven security threats.
