Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority Approves First Bitcoin ETF
On October 20, the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) has approved the first ETF that directly invests in Bitcoin and is aimed at retail investors, a move intended to prioritize investor protection and enhance transparency. FINMA said that, given Bitcoin's longer trading history and higher trading volume compared with other cryptocurrencies, the regulator approved the fund's exemption from certain risk diversification rules, but requires the regulated institution to take measures to reduce operational and asset custody risks and to clearly disclose Bitcoin price volatility and potential loss risks in the fund documents.
When sold, the relevant product must also comply with the rules of conduct under Switzerland's Financial Services Act (FinSA), including investment appropriateness and suitability assessments. FINMA noted that other fund providers have also submitted or announced plans to submit Bitcoin ETF applications.
