Starknet considers transitioning to L1 to independently drive quantum-safe upgrades, potentially implementing them as early as 2027.
On October 8, StarkWare co-founder and CEO Eli Ben-Sasson stated that because Starknet, as an L2, relies on Ethereum's underlying security, the project is currently considering various options, including migrating to an L1, to take independent control of the network's secure transition and mitigate potential cryptographic risks from quantum computing and AI.
He noted that Starknet is built on ZK-STARKs, possesses cryptographic agility, and has already laid out a post-quantum security migration roadmap. While Ethereum aims to achieve full quantum resistance at the L1 level by the end of 2029, Bitcoin has yet to make a comparable pledge, and Starknet could potentially roll out these upgrades as early as 2027.
