Skyrockets Nearly Threefold in a Month: Don’t Chase NEAR’s First Spot ETF Launch as a Straightforward "Bullish Catalyst"

On September 29, Bitwise officially launched the United States' first NEAR Spot ETF (Ticker: NRR) on NYSE Arca. Following the announcement, nerves across the entire cryptocurrency market were once again set on edge. After all, within just a month, NEAR surged from a low near $1.6 to $5.4, delivering a performance sheet showing nearly three times its initial price.

In this frenzied bullish atmosphere, many investors instinctively viewed this ETF as the bugle call for massive entry by traditional institutional capital.
However, when breaking down the underlying terms of this fund and comparing them with the actual commercial shifts NEAR has undergone over the past two months, one finds that the fundamental landscape is far more complex than press releases suggest.
For the NEAR token, this is not an institutional-driven bull market just getting started; the market has already front-run these expectations.
The Pipeline Isn't Just Tap Water, The Wall Street Entry Has Been Prematurely Discounted
The launch of the first single-asset spot ETF is fundamentally significant because it opens a compliant pathway for traditional American capital. However, building the pipeline does not mean it will immediately fill up with funds.
According to the product details disclosed by Decrypt, Bitwise has designed a "spot holding plus staking" model for NRR:
The fund charges an annual management fee of 0.75%, while investing all underlying tokens into on-chain staking to secure approximately 5% annualized returns. To cover node operation and custody costs, Bitwise deducts 33% of the staking rewards, with the remaining two-thirds factored back into the fund's NAV.
This structure works logically: as long as there is net inflow from OTC funds, custodian Coinbase must purchase an equivalent amount of tokens in the spot market and lock them up.
The crux of the issue lies in the timing gap.
The nearly threefold surge lasting from late August to late September has, in fact, already exhausted the market's positive expectations regarding regulatory approval and its initial listing. Until Bitwise discloses truly scaled and sustainable daily net subscription data, NRR remains merely an admission ticket displayed behind glass. If OTC buying pressure fails to materialize into a deluge, excessive leverage and overcrowded position structures will easily face cold profit-taking sell-offs.
Intents Network and AI Agents
If the ETF itself is merely a realization point of expectations, what actually drove NEAR to carve out a strong, independent trajectory in the third quarter was a fundamental shift in its ecosystem positioning and valuation anchor.
In pitch materials aimed at Wall Street, Bitwise completely discarded the outdated "Ethereum killer" narrative, redefining NEAR as machine money and a cross-chain settlement layer for the era of autonomous agents. This positioning precisely targets the primary market's current logic of chasing AI infrastructure.
More importantly, NEAR has delivered verifiable business carriers.

Leveraging the cross-chain intent protocol (NEAR Intents), its cumulative historical matched trading volume has surpassed $32 billion, connecting dozens of public blockchains. For AI agents that will interact frequently on-chain in the future, they require a fund dispatch channel that is unbound to a single custodian, low-friction, and highly responsive. By utilizing chain signature technology, NEAR perfectly occupies this ecological niche for machine routing. Furthermore, since the launch of Confidential Intents in mid-September, the throughput of privacy channels has surged rapidly, briefly capturing nearly half of the frontend market share, aligning perfectly with the industry-wide resonance around the revival of on-chain privacy trading.

The market no longer prices NEAR at a discount based on traditional Layer 1 hardware logic, but instead elevates it to the status of a global settlement gateway for the AI era. This is precisely the speculative target that bullish capital is eager to drive higher.
$20 Million in Revenue VS $150 Million in Inflation
Alongside the surge in network usage, NEAR has accordingly rewritten its tokenomic model, boarding the currently hottest trend of "protocol buybacks".
Currently, the protocol has slashed the annual inflation cap by half from 5% to 2.5%. Token vesting for early investors and the team was also fully settled last autumn, eliminating massive unlock cliffs from the balance sheet. More critically, the protocol activated its fee switch this year, taking real revenue generated from Intents fees to repurchase tokens directly on the open market.
This closed loop looks highly attractive, but a careful calculation using actual ledgers reveals it still rests on a fragile equilibrium. Based on current data, the NEAR protocol's annual net revenue sits at roughly $20 million. Against a current market cap exceeding $6 billion, a 2.5% annual inflation rate translates to approximately $150 million in newly created selling pressure each year.
This means current fee-based buybacks can only offset roughly 13% of the new inflation. The concept of "buybacks equal deflation" remains a distant threshold expectation for now. The higher the token price rises, the larger the USD-denominated market cap tied to inflation becomes, pushing the daily trading volume threshold required for the protocol to achieve breakeven even higher. Should cross-chain intent matching volumes decline subsequently, this internally driven flywheel built on perfect assumptions could face immediate refutation.
Clarifying Misconceptions
During the rapid price surge, panic emerged within the community claiming that "the token hitting $6.66 would trigger a large unlock dump." This anxiety peaked following the release of a teaser poster for "NEAR@6.66 next" by the official NEAR X account on September 26.
The official campaign indeed set $6.66 as the trigger condition for the next round and clearly marked an unlock pool of 666,666 NEAR tokens in the poster. Many investors instinctively view this as a hanging overhang of selling pressure, but a simple ledger calculation quickly reveals this concern lacks common-sense grounding.

First, the volume is extremely small. Even if all 666,000 tokens are eventually converted into circulating supply at the $6.66 price, their total value amounts to only around $4.4 million. For an asset with a circulating market cap exceeding $6 billion and daily trading volumes routinely reaching hundreds of millions, this promotional allocation represents less than 0.07% of the market cap—drowning it in the order book would barely cause a ripple.
Second, the rules have not yet been finalized. Referencing the official $3.33 reward mechanism from the previous round, token distribution required meeting dual stringent conditions: "privacy app TVL threshold reached" and "price holds at the target level for several days." Currently, the official account has only released a teaser poster; specific TVL thresholds and required holding days remain unpublished.
Bypassing these phantom noises, this doubling run leaves traders with an extremely practical proposition. The narrative has been fully priced in, and the ETF is officially listed. What will ultimately determine whether NEAR stabilizes above $5 or slides into a slow grind are just two undeniable metrics:
First, whether Bitwise publishes consecutive and robust ETF net inflows in upcoming trading sessions, proving that traditional financial capital truly validates this AI narrative; second, whether NEAR Intents can stabilize weekly trading volume firmly above $800 million to $1 billion, thereby providing continuous ammunition for buybacks. Until the data delivers an answer, blindly treating a newly established compliant entry point as a trump card for chasing highs often demands a heavy liquidity toll.
