Coherent's $2 Billion Quarter: Revenue, Profit Margin, and Capex

On August 12, U.S. photonics device manufacturer Coherent announced its FY2026 Q4 and full-year performance ending June 30. According to the company's performance report, quarterly revenue was $20.46 billion, a 33.8% year-over-year increase. The financials for this latest quarter are labeled as unaudited.

The company's management framed the demand within the context of AI data center connectivity shifting from copper to optics, manufacturing capacity expansion, and the ramp-up of new growth platforms. However, translating this financial report directly as "AI Optical Interconnects Selling More" would be too narrow. The company's current segmentation is "Data Center & Communications" and "Industrial," with no separate quarterly revenue breakdown for AI data centers, traditional communications, and other specific products disclosed publicly.

What truly stands out is the four tables within the same disclosure. The revenue curve for FY2026 shows a continuous upward trend, highly concentrated year-over-year changes in segment revenue, and a non-GAAP operating margin outpacing the gross margin. Significant changes have also been noted in fixed asset additions, inventory, and cash flow within the same fiscal year.

What Kind of Curve Is $20 Billion?

The focus of the first chart is not on the highest single bar. According to Coherent's quarterly performance announcements, revenue for each quarter of this fiscal year showed a quarter-on-quarter increase, reaching $20.46 billion in the final quarter, with a 13.3% sequential growth rate. The continuous upward trend in the chart goes beyond just "breaking $20 billion," indicating the latest quarter is part of a period of consecutive growth.

According to the company's FY2026 Q4 performance report, the latest quarter's statutory year-over-year growth rate was 33.8%. The company also disclosed a comparable year-over-year growth rate excluding divested businesses, serving different purposes and not to be conflated into a single growth rate.

The revenue guidance provided by the company for FY2027 Q1 is $22 billion to $24 billion. As per the company's announcement, this is a forward-looking estimate for the next quarter, to be presented separately from realized quarterly revenue and should not be misconstrued as orders or recognized revenue.

Where Did the Extra Revenue Land?

The second chart breaks down the year-over-year revenue change into two opposing forces. According to Coherent's FY2026 Q4 segment revenue table, the Data Center & Communications segment increased by $597 million compared to the same period last year.

On the other hand, the Industrial segment decreased by $81 million year-over-year, resulting in a net increase in total revenue of $516 million. This means that the increase in the Data Center & Communications segment exceeded the net increase for the entire company, while the decline in the Industrial segment offset some of that growth.

According to the same segment revenue table, the Data Center and Communications segment's Q4 revenue was $16.15 billion, accounting for approximately 79% of the company's quarterly revenue. This proportion indicates a revenue bias towards this segment and does not necessarily mean that 79% of it is derived from AI Optical Interconnect. The financial report did not provide a breakdown at the product, customer, or order level, so it is not possible to infer the precise contribution of a certain type of product from the segment name.

The value of this chart lies in its ability to draw two distinct lines. The company disclosed which segment contributed mainly to the growth, but the report does not answer what products and customers constitute that segment. These two aspects should not be conflated.

Why Operating Margin Accelerated

An increase in revenue does not automatically translate to improved profitability. According to the company's performance announcement, Coherent's non-GAAP gross margin increased from 38.1% in FY2025 Q4 to 40.2% in FY2026 Q4. The margin left after deducting direct costs from each dollar of revenue has expanded.

During the same period, the non-GAAP operating margin increased from 18.0% to 21.8%. As per the company's performance announcement, the Q4 operating margin growth rate exceeded that of the gross margin, as indicated specifically in the chart.

Simultaneously, the non-GAAP selling, general, and administrative expense ratio decreased, while the research and development expense ratio witnessed a slight increase. According to the company's performance announcement, these changes in expense ratios, coupled with the gross margin change, coincided during the margin improvement period but are not sufficient alone to demonstrate that any particular cost action led to the entire improvement.

It is also important to note the chart's metrics. Non-GAAP metrics exclude equity incentives, acquisition-related intangible asset amortization, restructuring, and other items. As per the company's disclosure, it is a supplementary metric that management uses to observe ongoing operational performance and cannot replace GAAP financial statements.

To translate these changes into everyday language, Coherent did not just sell more products during the same period. The movements in revenue, gross margin, and certain expense ratios collectively reflected in the operating margin, but the public report did not attribute this change to a single business or cost item.

Handling Growth, How Far the Cash Account Extends

The final graph shifts focus from the income statement to the cash flow statement. According to the company's FY2026 cash flow statement, additions to property, plant, and equipment (PP&E) amounted to $11.03 billion, approximately 2.5 times that of the previous fiscal year. Management stated that capital allocation is primarily aimed at expanding manufacturing capacity, but this investment cannot be directly equated to an expansion expense for a specific product line or customer.

In the same fiscal year, operating cash flow decreased from $634 million to $80 million. According to the company's balance sheet, year-end inventory also increased from $1.438 billion to $2.581 billion.

These three changes occurred in the same fiscal year, and the public disclosure did not provide a single causal breakdown among them.

According to the company's statement of cash flows, the financing activities' net cash flow for FY2026 was $1.477 billion, including various cash flows such as issuing shares, borrowing, and debt repayment. This is a fund arrangement table different from the income statement and cannot be explained solely by the quarterly revenue growth.

The focus of this financial report is not simply replacing "Data Center & Communications" with AI Revenue. Revenue concentration, profit margin, and the addition of fixed assets in the cash flow statement, along with inventory changes, all changed simultaneously in the FY2026 report.
